The History Of Cannabis

Erase the term marijuana from your mind it doesn’t exist. It’s basically the slang term for cannabis. Back in the day, early 1900s the phrase marijuana wasn’t around, cannabis however was and was actively used by the now well known pharmaceutical companies- Bristol Mayers Squib and Eli Lilly. Smoking cannabis recreationally wasn’t around either until the years of 1910-1920 when over 890,000 Hispanics legally migrated to the U.S. and brought this new form of consumption with them. When the great depression hit people were hurting and looking for something and someone to blame, because of the increase of immigrants as well as the new cultural changes, many Americans began to treat immigrants and cannabis (as it was something they consumed) as foreign and something that could be used to corrupt. The term Marijuana came into play from a man by the name of Harry Anslinger.

Anslinger was brought on as the manager of the then newly created Federal Bureau of Narcotics. From this position he was able to create campaigns directly against cannabis. In fact he once stood in front of congress and stated “Marijuana is the most violence causing drug in the history of mankind most Marijuana smokers are Negros, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their satanic music, jazz, and swing result from Marijuana usage.”

You see whenever Anslinger made a public appearance to campaign against cannabis he strictly used the term Marijuana making it known by Americans everywhere. Soon cannabis would not be found in any medicine. A bill would eventually come to pass in 1937 to federally criminalize the cannabis plant. Jumping forward to today more and more extensive research has been done that proves cannabis is a non addictive plant based medicinal compound that can be used in a multitude of ways to help people, including the discovery of CBD!
